Talking points for your MP or Senator

There are three things that are really important when you are advocating to your local MP or Senator...

  1. Make sure they know you are eligible to vote for them. Tell them where you live.
  2. Outline the issue that you care about – ie: Fixing the Sex Discrimination Act to properly protect women and girls. Tell them this is a vote changing issue for you.
  3. Ask them to represent your views because that is their job. Get a firm commitment from them of what they say they will do.

What commitment should I expect from my elected representative:

  • Agree to a meeting with you and confirm their availability to do so.
  • Agree to raise the issue with their colleagues.
  • Agree to read information that you send them.
  • Commit to advocating for a review of the Sex Discrimination Act.

Other hints and tips...

  • When we are in an election period, your MP may be out and about, but you can ask them to call you back.
  • Acknowledge your MP/Senators role in the Australian Parliament, you may wish to mention any work they have done to progress women’s rights in the past if you are aware.
  • Outline the importance of ensuring women are afforded sex-based rights and protections in the Sex Discrimination Act – see our landing page for more information.
  • Tell them your story – how does this issue effect you.
  • Tell them that sex and gender are two different things.
  • Explain the specific issues – see the letter that AF4WR sent to the Prime Minister here.
  • Don’t let them go without a commitment and a timeframe - remember they work for you!

On 30 March 2025, Australian Feminists for Women's Rights (AF4WR) released a media statement seeking commitment from the Federal Government, both now and after the May 2025 election, to review the Sex Discrimination Act with the intent of reinstating sex-based rights and protections.
